Personalizing your own pottery using Mayco Stroke and Coat glazes is a fun and creative process!
Materials Needed:
Pottery piece: Make sure it has been bisque fired and is ready for glazing.
Mayco Stroke and Coat glazes: Choose the colors you want to use. These glazes are known for their vibrant colors and ease of use. Additional colors available for purchase on our website or amazon: https://amzn.to/3LU12Lt
Brushes: Different sizes depending on the details of your design. Your kit includes two smaller brushes but here is a brush kit with many different size options: https://amzn.to/3SEQxze
Water: For rinsing brushes and thinning glazes if needed.
Palette: To pour small amounts of glaze for easy access.
Paper towels or cloth: For cleaning up spills and drying brushes.
Optional: Gloves to protect your hands from glaze, especially if you have sensitive skin.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you glaze your pottery effectively:
Prepare Your Workspace:
Lay down newspaper or a drop cloth to protect your work surface.
Have all your materials within reach.
Shake and Stir Your Glazes:
Stroke and Coat glazes should be well shaken before use to ensure the pigments are evenly distributed.
Stir the glaze gently with a palette knife or stir stick to achieve a consistent texture.
Plan Your Design:
If you have a specific design or pattern in mind, sketch it lightly on your pottery with a pencil. This will serve as your guide and number 2 pencils will fire off in the kiln, so you won’t have to worry about them being there on your final work.
Apply the Base Coat:
Start with the base color of glaze. Use a large brush to apply an even coat over the areas you want to cover. Let it dry completely before applying additional coats or colors.
Layering Colors:
Stroke and Coat glazes are designed to be layered. Once your base coat is dry, apply additional colors as desired.
Use smaller brushes for detail work and to avoid overlapping colors where you don’t want them.
Create Effects:
Experiment with different techniques such as blending colors, sponging, or splattering to create unique effects.
Stroke and Coat glazes can be used straight from the bottle or thinned with water for different effects.
Let Your Piece Dry:
Once you are satisfied with your design, allow your pottery to dry completely before firing.
Check for any missed spots or uneven coverage and touch up as needed.
Tips:
Cleanliness: Keep your brushes clean by rinsing them in water between colors and wiping them with a cloth or paper towel. Using wet paint brushes can dilute the paints so we recommend allowing them to thoroughly dry or use a new brush.
Experimentation: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different colors and techniques to find what works best for your style. If you are unhappy with a section of your painting, you can use a damp sponge to wipe off the glaze. Before re applying your paint, allow the ceramic to FULLY dry - this may take a couple hours.
Safety: Always follow safety guidelines when working with pottery glazes, including proper ventilation and wearing gloves if necessary.
